Katie Gavin shares new single “Casual Drug Use,” visiting Boston on her first solo tour
MUNA frontwoman Katie Gavin is due to release her debut solo album, What A Relief, on October 25th via Saddest Factory Records. Last month at Newport Folk Festival she performed her fist solo set on the intimate Bike Stage on Sunday afternoon, after thrilling the festival audience on Friday with MUNA.
On Wednesday she released “Casual Drug Use,” the earliest written and one of the most infectious tracks on What A Relief. During her Newport set she performed the then unreleased track during her solo set. Written after a breakup in 2016, “Casual Drug Use” is as anthemic as it is vulnerable, and reminiscent of heartland rock and road songs like The Chicks’ “The Long Way Around.”
Gavin says this about the track: “This is a song about being young and on bad behavior, and the comfort of having friends by your side. I wrote it in 2016 after a day trip I took with a friend, and so I thought it would be sweet to film the video on a road trip I had planned with my childhood best friend. The different colored potions in the video are meant to be a stand-in for whatever external substance we use to change our internal states.”
This fall she’ll embark on a short solo tour, performing at intimate venues. The lone New England date comes at Brighton Music Hall on December 14th. Tickets sold out in minutes for the show, but there are some resale options available – HERE.
