After eight years without touring or releasing music, The Fray, a band known for their heartfelt lyrics and captivating performances, returned to Boston at the Orpheum Theater on October 1st. The band’s former frontman, Isaac Slade, left in 2022, and the lineup now consists of Joe King, Dave Welsh, and Ben Wysocki. The band’s hiatus was due to personal and creative reasons, but it’s safe to say the fans were looking forward to the band going back on tour.
Within the packed Orpheum theater were fans of all ages, some of whom had seen them years before, and some of whom who were seeing the group for the first time. The stage was set with backing lights, making it feel like an intimate show. Having to step into lead vocals, some fans were nervous to see how King would take on the role, but he exceeded expectations. With so many hits and such a significant presence of Issac to fill, he was able to command the stage in a way that made the show so fun, and he was reaching the whole audience. The set list consisted of hits like “Over My Head”, “Look After You,” and “How to Save a Life.” They also included songs from Helios and their new EP, The Fray Is Back. The band’s interaction with the audience was a highlight of the show, with King often stepping off the stage to sing among the fans, creating a truly immersive experience.
Despite the minimalistic stage set-up, The Fray’s performance was a testament to their enduring popularity. The band’s ability to command the stage and the enthusiastic participation of the audience more than made up for any lack of elaborate production. The Fray’s return to Boston was a resounding success, reaffirming their status as a beloved act with a dedicated fan base.
