Hot Gig Alert (11/14): Liverpool’s The Wombats make their return to Boston

One of my favorite adventures is heading to a House of Blues show when the Red Sox aren’t in town. No offense to my local boys in red and white, it’s just a cozy vibe. Wearing an oversized sweater, potentially a pre-show beverage, looking out on an off-season Fenway at the Bleacher Bar across the street. And..especially on a Friday night, knowing I’m in for an incredibly dancy night. Lucky for Boston, Liverpool’s The Wombats are making their gallant return to town, and with two other bands full of Brits, Red Rum Club and Only The Poets in tow. The band is coming in town still pretty fresh off the heels of their latest full-length, Oh! The Ocean (2/14/25), with Boston’s show serving as the last date of their current North American run.
The original lineup trio has been coming to town since their debut in 2007, first hitting the iconic, long-loved Boston venue Great Scott. The band has made a name for itself with incredibly dancey, electric moments and have naturally grown as they’ve gotten older. The band recently announced the deluxe release of Oh! The Ocean, which is coming out on December 5th and have announced their newest track, “Holy Sugar,” which is just the first of the additional tracks on the release. The band reunited with Mark Crew, the producer of the track above, whose credits also include iconic moments for the band like “Greek Tragedy,” “Turn,” and “Lemon To A Knife Fight”.
Something magical about a live show from The Wombats is that they continue to put on a show that makes you feel like you’re still in a little rock club, like the first time I saw a live Wombats show way, way back in the day at the Middle East downstairs in Cambridge in 2012. This served as one of the band’s first performances in town. A Wombats show promises to sprinkle all your favorites amongst their catalogue into the set, despite how many albums the band now has under their belts. The band finally achieved their long-awaited first #1 album with 2022’s Fix Yourself, Not the World, and have continued to secure new fans, fans still in their early twenties, discovering the band for the first time, despite the band’s longevity.
Doors open at 7 pm, with the first band on at 7:30 pm. For any past HOB attendees, the line can take a bit of a while to get in, so if that first band is someone you’d like to see, I’d definitely get there a little early. And let’s be honest, if you’re being taken out on the road with The Wombats, they’ll be something you want to see.
You can still pick up limited tickets for the gig here. Better get your dancing shoes polished up! 10/10 recommend securing a floor ticket here if you can, versus the mezzanine, a Wombats gig is meant to be a sweaty dance pit. Even if the band is now an arena-level act, the band is surely still going to put on a true rock-and-roll club show on a HOB scale. A performance that UK fans aren’t privy to anymore, so definitely take advantage of this one!
