LIVE REVIEW + PHOTOS: Franc Moody in Boston, MA (02.21.26)

I had been waiting a long time to finally witness the funk, joy, and unfiltered energy of Franc Moody live. I missed their last stop in Boston, but this time there was no chance I was sitting it out. On a frigid Saturday night, just hours before a forecasted winter snowstorm, Paradise Rock Club was buzzing with anticipation.

The crowd was exactly what you’d hope for at a Franc Moody show, a vibrant mix of college students and longtime funk devotees, all ready to surrender their Saturday night to groove. The room was packed, but comfortably so, enough energy to feel electric, yet enough space to move. From a photographer’s perspective, it was ideal: room to experiment, shift angles, and capture the band’s kaleidoscopic lighting from creative vantage points.

They opened strong with newer material from their latest album *Chewing the Fat*, immediately setting the tempo with “Sharks in the Water.” The lighting design mirrored the saturated tones of their album artwork — rich, colorful, and immersive — pulling the audience straight into their sonic universe. From there, they dove into “Love Will Make You Do Strange Things,” which somehow sounded even more dynamic and layered live than on record.

A clear highlight came with “Terra Firma” from *Dreams in Colour*, the album that helped elevate them into wider recognition. The groove was tight, the crowd fully locked in. After a brief pause, they launched into newer singles like “Going Through the Motions,” a radio-ready groove that had the entire venue moving in unison and showcased just how confidently they’ve evolved their sound. If there had been anyone in the venue still unsure about Franc Moody’s brand of soul-infused funk-pop, you would have had to search hard every corner of the room, upstairs and down, was moving.

Mid-set, they eased the tempo slightly with “Flesh and Blood” and “Henge,” taking a moment to tell Boston how much they love playing here though they couldn’t resist asking why it’s always so cold. The warmth inside the venue, however, more than compensated.

The momentum surged again with “Got to Go” and “Move Me,” before one of the night’s most explosive moments: “Skin to Skin.” The roof practically lifted. Every voice joined in, every body swayed or bounced in rhythm. It was communal, euphoric, and unmistakably alive. At one point, Jon Moody even made his way into the crowd, briefly crowd-surfing — a spontaneous moment that perfectly captured the spirit of the night.

Later in the set came newer favorites like “Space Between Us,” “Cherry,” and “Transit,” along with the title track “Chewing the Fat.” When they stepped off stage for the faux goodnight, anyone paying attention or sneaking a glance at the setlist knew they weren’t finished.

They returned to thunderous applause and did something that more artists, especially bigger names, should take note of: they announced they’d be meeting fans at the merch table after the show. That kind of accessibility matters. For fans, even a quick hello or photo can turn a great concert into a lifelong memory.

Before closing out the night, they played “Yuri,” building the groove patiently, layering beats and textures until the room felt suspended in rhythm. And then came the inevitable finale: “Dopamine.” Hearing it live was a reminder of why Franc Moody continues to build momentum it’s infectious, euphoric, and tailor-made for a Saturday night release.

While I rarely like to declare any show “the best ever,” this one honestly felt that way to me. It was well worth the wait. If you have the chance to catch them while they’re on their North American tour, do it. See them now in an intimate venue before they inevitably explode and start taking over much larger stages.
