London-based rock band The Last Dinner Party performed in Boston on Saturday night, delivering a phenomenal show. Unfortunately, their bassist, Georgia Davies, had suffered a back injury and flew back to England to recover, so joining them was Max Lilly on the bass.
Although the band has traded the helm among three singers, it is clear that Abigail Morris is their frontwoman. Overall, her stage presence is significantly is the strongest of the group. She danced and utilized the entire stage to her advantage, which was built completely in the style of ancient Roman architecture. Overall, her stage presence and energy were incredible from start to finish.
The band’s performance is very reminiscent of a theater show, with elaborate set design, melodies, and songwriting that would fit right in as a production in London’s West End. Each song is written and performed in such a theatrical way, enhancing Morris’ naturally incredible stage presence. Continuing the theatrical feel, one audience member held a sign that said “Participate in 24-hour Shakespeare,” with Sonnet 115 written on the back for Abigail to read. The fan asked her to help with a challenge to read every Shakespeare play and sonnet in 24 hours. Her line delivery was so spot-on and beautiful that I was surprised to learn she was never a theater kid.
The band’s kindness is definitely shown throughout the entire show. Of all the 50+ concerts I have attended in my life, I have never seen a lead singer acknowledge the audience as much as Abigail Morris. She stopped several times to acknowledge every fan’s signs she could see. The band never shouted out their own album or music; they shouted out the opener, Florence Road, several times. Abigail made sure to thank Florence Road and mention it as much as possible throughout the night.
Overall, the show and the band reminded me of old school Riot Grrrl, a genre built by women for women to provide a safe space to be themselves.
With their partnership with Ribbons for Provisions to end world hunger, a booth to help you sign up to vote, and the lead singer stopping to promote a fan’s chain mail armor business after seeing her sign in the crowd, The Last Dinner Party is certainly successful in blending theatrics with the Riot Grrrl inspired style.
The Last Dinner Party is currently promoting their sophomore studio album, From the Pyre. Listen to that – HERE.
The band will perform one more New England area show tonight (April 20th) in Portland, ME. Tickets for that show start at $53 and are available – HERE.
