HOT GIG ALERT: Spanish Love Songs rock Cambridge tonight and tomorrow
Tonight kicks off an incredibly special tour for the road dogs in The Wonder Years, playing two sets each night in huge underplay rooms for the band. Even extra special, Cambridge is the only city on the tour that will be treated to two nights of this truly intimate experience. Of course it’s only fitting that the bands they’re bringing out to fill in the bill are three bands that are following in their footsteps in a huge way. Supporting The Wonder Years, you have Nashville’s Free Throw, LA’s Spanish Love Songs and Tallahassee’s Pool Kids. All serious hot beds for music these days but you already knew that!
Despite it being a long night and I’m sure one who’s party will continue on at Emo Night in the Sinclair’s restaurant next door after, it’s pretty detrimental to your emo kid soul to get there early enough to catch the second band’s set, Spanish Love Songs. Less than two weeks out off the release of their sophomore album, “Brave Faces Everyone”, the band is poised to create a raucous room tonight. The album immediately brings to mind bands like The Front Bottoms and The Menzingers in the best ways. In listening to the album, I found myself constantly writing down lyrics from this love letter to their youth and what we as humans deal with every day but feel like we can’t always say out loud. In particular, ‘Generation Loss’ and ‘Routine Pain’ took me for quite a ride, but the others just as much. While the set is sure to be pretty short being an opening set within five sets tonight, it will be an experience Boston fans will be talking about for a hot minute.
While the show is sold out, like beyond sold out, I’m sure the band will be quick to return to this city of ours soon. And if you are a lucky one going to the show tonight, don’t be mad at yourself later when Spanish Love Songs is the band on everyone’s lips in between MCR sing-alongs next door. Get there early, do yourself that favor, doors at six!
