LIVE REVIEW + PHOTOS: Goose in Boston, MA (09.02.24)
Goose, the ever-evolving jam band from Connecticut known for their eclectic setlists and immersive live performances, brought their unique energy to MGM Fenway on September 4, 2024. This was the 5th time seeing this group live (6th if you include their side project Orebolo) and 4th time shooting photography for them. By now I’ve learned never to miss a tour when they come to town, as I feel they are the most exciting jam band on the circuit today. Growing up a Phish fan, I feel like they are poised to be next in line in that jam band royalty. There’s something intangible…something different and exciting about their material and the way they jam. The way they breathe life into a song of theirs when played on stage. I’ve seen so many bands in this genre, many still playing the small stages…and some are pretty good. But most times, the jams get boring, or they grow stale. Since busting in on the scene in 2016, a career defining album (“Dripfield”) in 2022, and a co-tour with Trey Anastasio, these guys have been keeping it fresh as hell as they get better every year.
This was the last show of their 3-night run at MGM Fenway. The set kicked off with “The Whales,” a track that set a high bar with its deep groove and infectious rhythm. Goose’s mastery of melding different genres was immediately evident as they seamlessly transitioned into a cover of Jorge Ben Jor’s “Mas que nada.” The Brazilian classic was given a fresh, psychedelic twist, showcasing the band’s ability to reinterpret familiar tunes with their own flair. “Doc Brown” followed, with its tight interplay and intricate solos, stirring up an already enthusiastic crowd of die-hard fans. The highlight of the set was undoubtedly the “Indian River” (80s synth version), which included an exhilarating “Welcome to Delta” jam. This was a testament to Goose’s experimental spirit, blending synth beats with their signature improvisation. The sequence continued with “Wysteria Lane > Echo of a Rose,” where the band revisited and polished the ending of the previous night’s performance. “Slow Ready” closed the first set on a high note, with its intertwining melody providing a poignant contrast to the earlier high-energy pieces. The track’s gradual build-up and climactic release left the audience eagerly anticipating the second set.
The second set began with “Thatch,” a song that established a lively, upbeat mood. The band’s harmony was noticeable as they ventured into “Creatures > Doobie Song,” a medley that effortlessly blended genres and showcased their improvisational prowess. The transition from the funky “Creatures” to the laid-back vibes of “Doobie Song” was seamless, highlighting Goose’s ability to craft engaging musical journeys. A standout moment was the cover of Fat Freddy’s Drop’s “Fish in the Sea.” Goose injected their own style into the track, combining smooth, reggae-infused rhythms with their distinctive jam elements. The set concluded with a dynamic “726” into “Dripfield.” The pairing of these two fan favorites was a powerful display of the band’s range, from the soaring peaks of “726” to the deep, immersive grooves of “Dripfield.” The flow between the songs kept the energy high and the crowd grooving in their element.
For the encore, Goose delivered a delightful surprise with their cover of Otis Day & The Knights’ “ShamaLamma Ding Dong.” This playful and energetic choice was a perfect way to close the night, with the band’s infectious enthusiasm resonating throughout the venue. It was a fun and spirited end to an exceptional evening of music and really epic lighting. I swear they are currently outdoing most bands I on the live circuit with that light setup- it’s been quite impressive. Overall, Goose’s performance at MGM Fenway was a testament to their remarkable versatility and talent. Their ability to traverse genres and deliver both deeply intricate jams and light-hearted covers made for a truly memorable concert experience. This Boston audience left with smiles on their faces, already looking forward to their next chance to groove with these young powerhouses.
