Interview: Colorblind’s Travis Moseley on their most recent tour, their upcoming debut album and more
A few weeks back, I headed out to what happened to be the last night of The Hounds of the Underground tour, where a trio of up-and-coming bands made it to Boston. That trio? Australia’s Windwaker, PA’s If Not For Me, and, of course, the Austin, Texas-based act Colorblind. Throughout the night, through chatting with all three bands on the tour and witnessing the bands watching each other’s sets throughout the night, the love and friendship bonds that had been created on this run were clear. Each band had never headlined a tour until this point, so the nerves were touched on by all the bands, but their fan base was clear with a packed venue that night. As well as a crowd that didn’t clear out when certain bands finished their set.
Each band will also be making their return to the area in the next few months, and Colorblind in particular will be playing Big Night Live on November 14th; along with Catch Your Breath and a handful of other bands. But that time around, the band will be in the opening position, so the show in Boston was a clear indication of the success the band is starting to build on. Each band took the stage for around an hour or so, which allowed a full-fledged performance for each band. Just a few hours before the show, I caught up with longtime frontman Travis Moseley to talk about the band’s upcoming debut album, Who Sold You This Truth + + Was It Yours to Hold, their experience on the new concluded run, and Travis’s personal touring essentials!

New England Sounds: This is the last date of this co-headliner. How has it been getting to know the other bands and being out on the road together?
Travis Moseley: It was really scary when we first started because all of us had only been supporting bands. So us coming on and trying to see what we can pull together was a nerve-wracking thing. But we’re all so pleasantly surprised with how it’s been going. And the crowds have been so much fun. Not to sound cliché, but literally all three of the bands, we’ve all become such great friends from this. And we’re literally all like sad that this is the last day, because it’s been so much fun.
NES: And you all live quite a ways apart, especially with Windwaker. Nowhere close to you.
Travis: Exactly, exactly.
NES: One last hurrah tonight. Then you did the tour with Caskets. You’re back in Boston in November, so not too far from Big Live, which is a bigger room for sure. But as you’ve gotten used to being on the road, you’re still a relatively young band. What are the three things you’ve realized you really need to have with you, now that you’ve gotten used to this?
Travis: Three things that I must have with me? I have a vocal nebulizer that I have to use, and I also have a Doctorvox, which is like a vocal bubbler thing. So that’s two things. What’s another thing that I really need? Water.
NES: Especially in this heat.
Travis: Yeah!
NES: This is hot for us. I know you’re used to some hotter temperatures.
Travis: Yeah, no, this is great.
NES: What’s the hottest it gets down there?
Travis: Like 105 and stuff on certain days. It gets hot, man, it’s rough.
NES: Then you have an album coming out in August, but I know you released an EP, or I’m sure like a preview, of what’s to come. But when did you kind of start working on this record? I believe it’s the first full-length for Colorblind.
Travis: Yes, it’s the first full-length. We started working on it, I want to say, in the summer of 2024. And it was the first opportunity that we had to block out two months and really figure ourselves out. From the start of the band, all we could really afford to do was just work our jobs and pool up money to be able to make just one song at a time. So this was really special, because we really felt like we got to explore so much of ourselves, and we’re really proud of it.
NES: Is it pretty present in the sets for this tour?
Travis: Yes, it’s very present. There are a few old songs, but we’re playing a lot of new stuff.
NES: How does the writing process go for the band? You have been releasing a song by song for a while, I believe, since 2020, or even before that.
Travis: I mean, the writing process is a lot of the time, we go in and write songs from scratch. A lot of people will come in with demos and stuff like that, which we have done before, but a lot of the time, we like to just kind of surprise ourselves. And we’ll go in with nothing planned, well, a rough idea, and kind of have some things that we want to touch on, things we want to say. Things instrumentally that we want to sprinkle in, but a lot of it is a very kind of zen thing, and we go in, and just make what we’re feeling on that day.
NES: You talked about how, in the past, you would do a song at a time. Having to save up enough to do a song at a time. How was it to kind of be in the studio and be in the moment?
Travis: It was so much fun. Having that opportunity felt like it grew us a lot. And it was super fun, we had a lot of really great people come in and help. We had this guy named No Love, who’s in MGK’s touring band now, who’s like the sweetest guy. It was really funny because No Love helped write the heaviest song on the record, but now he’s doing MGK’s stuff. He plays like the cello, but he came in and ripped these sick riffs on “God Complex” that Justin had started. We also had Matt McAndrew come in from Rain City Drive and help with vocals. He was just the funniest person to have around; every day was like a really big hangout. But it’s weird, from starting and just making one song at a time, I feel like there’s just this different level of repetition that we got from making this album that I feel grew us a lot. And we’re really happy with it.
NES: Perfect, and then as I keep on saying, it’s the last night of the tour. Maybe some highlights of this North American tour for you, cities that really stuck out to you?
Travis: Cities that really stuck out, I remember Mesa, Arizona, being really fun. Dallas, all of the Texas shows were amazing. That was awesome. Also, we all spent a day off in Lake Tahoe, we canoed on this crystal clear lake, it was so much fun. Such a highlight from this tour. Sometimes you get lucky with your days off, and you can spend them in a really pretty city with the other bands. So much fun, but yeah, all the shows were super cool. They’re all blending together at this point. Oh, and also Richmond, Virginia, was a really, really awesome show. Yeah, we loved it.
NES: Then, like we said before, the album is planned for August. You have that tour opening for Catch Your Breath, so we kind of know what’s coming up. But maybe focuses or goals for you personally as an artist, or kind of in these next few months, as you take on this tour, the album will be out in the world?
Travis: I think we’re just focusing on releasing this stuff as strong as we possibly can. We shot some beautiful music videos for a couple more singles that we have coming. So that’s going to be a big focus, is just getting all of our ducks in a row. To get these songs out and to get this record out, and yeah, then get ready for this big tour. It’s Catch Your Breath, TX2, Arankai, and us. We’ve met all those people before. Catch Your Breath actually came out of the same local scene in Austin, Texas, together. So we’re all besties, and yeah, we’re the opening band on that tour, so I think we’re just really going to focus on being a really engaging and fun opening band. And really trying to pull our weight as much as we can, and just came out as strong as we can.
