Interview: If Not For Me’s Patty Glover on their upcoming album, their time on their most recent tour and much more

On a balmy night a few weeks ago, I headed out to The Hounds of the Underground tour’s final show to catch up with If Not For Me‘s lead vocalist, Patty Glover, just hours before the final show of the tour. A tour that Glover said was one that blew away any expectations the band had going in, and grew the friendship between all three bands on the run. Feted by Colorblind and Windwaker in a three-way co-headliner, each band clearly brought their own fans to the show. But the crossover or new fans made in the crowd was evident, as the room remained full throughout the night.

My chat with Patty took place just a few days before the band had a lot to announce, and luckily, I was given a bit of a glimpse into it. The band will be dropping their new record, Where the Light Begins to Fade, on August 14th. And in support of that, the band will be making their way back to our state come October, when they will be playing, due to popular demand, two shows at one of my personal forever-favorite spots, The Palladium, in Worcester: October 17th & October 18th. That time around, the band will be serving as main support on Wind Walkers’ first-ever headlining tour and will be sure to be serving up lots of their soon-to-be-released album! To hold you over until then, you can find my chat with Patty below!

New England Sounds: This is the last date of this tour, this North American run. I’d say you’ve been together the longest out of the bands on this tour. Maybe how has it been, being out with these guys?

Patty Glover: It has been, honestly, amazing. I feel the tour has exceeded all of our expectations, which we’re really stoked about. Not that we didn’t have expectations, but every night has been a banger. And it’s just sick to be out with these bands, they’re just fantastic.

NES: Then  the last record was in 2024, but you did release the new single in April. How do you think these sets have been going? Has “Broken Throne” made it into the set?

Patty: Yes, yes, we’re playing it second. And it’s been so fun, because there’s that one, we did “Unholy” a couple of months ago, too. They’re both in the set, and it’s so cool to see everybody singing those songs already. I feel like everybody knows them all immediately, which is great, and it’s just so fun to be playing new music. I’m always a sucker for that (laughs).

NES: Then, this tour is a three-way co-headliner. No one’s like the main headliner on this tour. How has that experience been with these two bands?

Patty: It’s been cool because this is the first time any of our bands have done any co-headlining or headlining across the United States. We’ve done like one-offs here and there, stuff like that, but we’ve never done a full US headliner or co-headliner tour. And that goes along with what I was saying: like, it’s exceeded our expectations because every show has been so sick. It’s been cool to see how the rotation goes. Like whoever is the headliner that night, it’s been cool to see how we’re all doing in those markets and that kind of stuff. It’s funny, because you can tell in a certain market, oh, our band’s been there a little more, and their band’s been there maybe a little more. But the crowds have been so receptive to every band, and I think that’s what’s so great about it being a co-headliner. Is that they’re here for all of us. Nobody is above anybody. It’s been fantastic in that way.

NES: Perfect. Then I wanted to ask: you are on this three-band tour, kind of a Warped Tour aesthetic. Are there bands from the Warped Tour era that you would have liked to tour with, in a touring setting like this one?

Patty: Yeah, I’m trying to think of some classic Warped Tour bands. I guess it does kind of feel like that on a smaller scale, which I love, tours like this, honestly. With the rotations and with nobody above anybody, we all have the same set length. We all have a lighting package that looks super sick, all that stuff. It feels good because we’re all just there for each other, and it’s been a real teamwork tour. Which is very, very reminiscent of Warped Tour and stuff like that that we’ve done in the past. I’m here for it, I love it.

NES: Then I mentioned “Broken Throne” and “Unholy” as well. How is the writing process currently going? I mean, you may have something that you can’t talk about? Because I know the last record was about two years ago.

Patty: Yeah, so, maybe you’ll see an announcement on that this week. I can probably talk about it a little bit. We are going to announce our new record this week, and I think it comes out August 14th, I want to say. Whatever the second Friday in August is. I’m very excited; we’ve been working on it for so long now. So it’s good to finally be at a point where we’re ready to announce it. So very stoked.

NES: When did you start working on that one?

Patty: Pretty much as soon as we put out the last one (laughs). But like last year, we were touring the whole year. So it was, we’d be on the road for a month or two or something like that, and then I’d be home for a couple of weeks. Then I would have to fly to LA or go to Michigan or wherever, doing all these writing sessions. Then I’d be home, then back on the road, then back and forth like that. So that’s why it took so long. And we wanted to be happy with it; we wanted it to be the best that it could be. So that’s why it took a little bit longer, but we are very stoked that it’s finally done, and ready to be put out, and tons of new stuff. And I think some of the best singles are yet to come. So, stoked about that.

NES: Does the process still change for you? I know you’ve been in the band for quite a long time. Or has it gotten into a pretty steady rhythm?

Patty: Yeah, the record was a little different because we worked with a lot of different producers on this one. Normally, we’ll do like a handful of them, but this time, we probably did like six or seven. Like, I don’t even know, and it was mainly just because we’re semi-new to doing this system of like flying out for writing sessions. So we just wanted to work with as many people as we could and see who we work with  best. And I think we learned a lot through the process about who we really enjoy working with, and who we have the best results with. So that’s cool, and I think for the next record, we’ll have a more streamlined process now that we know a bit more about what we want to do with that kind of stuff. But yeah, it was an interesting learning curve for this record. I’m happy with how it turned out, though.

NES: Then, I keep on saying it. This is the end of this tour. I’m sure you’re ready for a little bit of rest.

Patty: Honestly, no!

NES: Just keep going.

Patty: Yeah, this tour has been so fun that I could easily do another month of this. We keep talking about it on the tour, like to just run it back in a couple of years. Same lineup or something.

NES: It must be so sad, because you and Colorblind are both in the States, but Windwaker is obviously from across the world.

Patty: Yeah, and that’s why we were teasing the idea of, what if we did like a “Hounds of the Down Underground” tour. But it’s great, because I feel like this whole package got really close really quickly. That’s fantastic, but it’s coming to an end, and it’s so bittersweet all the time. But it is what it is, unfortunately.

NES: You’ll hopefully have a good time tonight, a good farewell before you hit the road.

Patty: Yeah, we’re stoked for tonight. I think tonight’s going to be a good one. It’s one of the highest-selling shows of the tour. And I think it’s a good market for all of our bands, so it should be an awesome show.

NES: Have you played this venue before? I know you were in town with Funeral Portrait pretty recently.

Patty: We have not. I think we played somewhere in Cambridge.

NES: Middle East?

Patty: Yeah, Middle East Club. And we’ve done that, we did like MGM Music Hall with Electric Callboy once, which was crazy. But as far as like proper Boston, I don’t think we’ve played that often over here, so I’m excited. Normally, when we do Massachusetts, we do Worcester or something like that. But yeah, so we’re stoked to be back over here.

NES: Then maybe to end it off, I know it may sound cheesy, but the album, you haven’t announced it yet, but it’s finished. There’s going to be a lot coming soon, especially in the next week. Maybe hopes or goals for the next few months as you enter this next album cycle?

Patty: Of course! Our new record, it will be called, Where the Light Begins to Fade, we’re stoked about that. Should be out August 14th, I believe, and I’m very excited about that. You’ll also see a tour announcement this week, actually, it comes out tomorrow, so I can talk about that. We’re going to be on the road with Wind Walkers in the fall, and it will be their first US headliner, and I’m very excited for that. My goal is just to put that record out and have a sick tour with them. Finish off the year strong and should be awesome.

NES: Windwaker right into Windwalkers, can’t mess up the names on them!

Catch the band next in the area at The Palladium in Worcester as main support to Wind Walkers for two shows, 10/17 & 10/18. Due to demand, a second show was added, and very limited tickets remain, which can be picked up here!
