Writer’s Note: Singer-Songwriter Jonatha Brooke stopped at City Winery Boston for a ‘hometown’ show that was full of a range of emotions. Brooke had a somewhat retrospective approach retelling stories of her life and career, such as being influenced by Woody Guthrie, being invited by his daughter to sift through his archives, all that inspired her to write The Works, her 2008 release. Brooke was accompanied onstage by guitarist Sean Driscoll, who brought a little more depth on guitar than just Brooke’s acoustic. The two had an unmistakeable onstage chemistry. Brooke thanked the audience for helping them pick the days outfits via instagram after commenting that Driscoll went the floral route and she didn’t. A little later in the set, Brooke talked about the play she wrote titled My Mother Has 4 Noses, that details the relationship she had with her mother in her later years who suffered from dementia. She played a few numbers from that while switching to the piano. Such as “Are you Getting This Down,” and “Light Years” She was pretty candid and honest about how she was feeling throughout that time in her life. It was a moving performance. A few parts Joni Mitchell and a few parts Bette Midler but all in all very Jonatha Brooke. Check out photos from the show below, while listening to her song “Hastag Lullaby”
