Happy Little Clouds share new single, “Higher,” to kick off 2025
Today, Boston-based power pop outfit Happy Little Clouds shared their latest single, “Higher” via The Sound Cove singles label.
The song was recorded and mixed locally by Ethan Dussault at New Alliance Audio, and mastered by Pete Weiss at Jade Cow Music both out of Somerville, MA and partnered with The Sound Cove to push the song to new heights, this track marks the next step in the evolution of the band’s journey, which will be fully demonstrated on the upcoming album. Their last full length album, Shift, was released in 2016.
“Higher” is driven by bassist Derek Bergstrom’s 90s-esque melody with a lyric line sung by vocalist/guitarist Jac Mestel that repeats the song’s title, and the second feel that lands on a chorus that asks, “Is that the way you love?” a line inspired by Mestel’s experience in and out of different kinds of relationships.
“When you see enough examples in life of relationships that masquerade as love, you can then understand what unconditional love really is and how it always inspires you to become your highest self,” said Mestel. “That’s real love, the kind of love that opens you up in a vulnerable and scary way and may really wound you at times, but is so authentic and real and deep and really sees and carries you higher.”
The song ends with a callback to the intro feel with drummer, Jess Townsend, adding some extra bass drum percussion. “I was inspired by drumline stuff to add marching bass drum to the very end of the song to take it ‘higher.’ And Jac said it feels like a heartbeat to them, which is pretty apropos to the theme of the song at that point,” said Townsend.
