From recording into a $20 Best Buy microphone in small-town Virginia to racking up over half a billion streams worldwide, Ryan Oakes has built his career independently, and entirely on his own terms. That motivation was on full display on August 11th at a sold-out Paradise Rock Club in Boston, MA, on the No Vacancy Tour, where Ryan Oakes brought his signature blend of old school hip-hop grit and rock intensity to a passionate Boston crowd.
Heavily influenced by artists like Linkin Park and Eminem, Oakes has truly carved out his own lane, and with over 500 live shows behind him, it shows. His performances have earned a reputation as “one part ceremonial and one part full-blown rager,” and that duality played out in real time: moments of quiet intensity giving way to all-out chaos, and the crowd fed off of every shift.
If the setlist was any indication, Ryan’s upcoming record Scary Stories After Dark will be full of atmospheric heaviness and massive rock hooks, with a few bars mixed in between. Boston sold out the room, and Ryan Oakes gave them every reason why.
