Editor’s Note: Canadian post-punk group Preoccupations first came into our lives as the sort of noise rock/art punk, Pitchfork endorsed, buzz band that you might find yourself watching during a midday set at SXSW. In their earliest days, they were known as Viet Cong which in 2012 was a name just controversial enough to get them noticed. But times change and so do bands, by April of 2016 the name Viet Cong had become more of a detriment to the band than an asset, and they changed their name to Preoccupations later that year releasing a new self-titled album. I’d stop short of calling re-invention, but they have taken their sound and added a bit more positivity to it since the change, and nowhere is that more apparent than on their latest album New Material. Last night, the band was in Boston, MA to play Brighton Music Hall, check out snaps from the show, including opener Freak Heat Wave courtesy of yours truly.
