You may have heard the hype around British indie darlings The Last Dinner Party whose debut album Prelude to Ecstasy has reached No. 1 on the UK charts and No. 2 on the US Heatseekers charts for new and upcoming artists. On Sunday night Boston got a chance to see that the hype is more than real. In front of a packed house, the five-piece turned six-piece in a live setting played through their entire debut record. The music itself is only half the equation with the group though, as their visual presentation at shows adds in an entire new level of experience for fans. Many in attendance showed up fully dressed in outfits inspired by the group’s unique fashion sense.

Front woman Abigail Morris’ stage presence is that of a seasoned performer with her impressive moves dancing about the stage and even going into the crowd briefly for a little audience participation. In an era where it’s so difficult for a band to come up with an original concept The Last Dinner Party’s renaissance faire visual aesthetic and classic rock inspired take on buzz-worthy indie rock has managed to establish them as a breath of fresh air in the music scene.

Often encouraging fans to dress up for a specific theme at their shows they’re able to give their shows a unique feel, while also likely resulting in many people passing entry lines for shows to ask “who’s playing tonight?” out of sheer curiosity as to why so many people are dressed as they are. Morris promised the crowd they’d be back soon (as many bands do) but given that they have already outgrown the venue size they played on Sunday it’s likely to see them back in the area by the end of 2024.
