LIVE REVIEW + PHOTOS: Steve Lacy in Boston, MA (10.13.26)
What was expected to be a special and unforgettable night of music, was even more than that, as Steve Lacy left it all on the stage last night at MGM Music Hall in Boston. From vocal ranges that other musicians dream for, to the high quality talent he possesses with a guitar in his hands. Proven to be just as big a powerhouse of a live performer as he is as an overall album maker.
The night started with technical difficulties and Steve getting on the microphone backstage to inform us on the issue and let everybody know he will be out there soon in a way only Steve Lacy would. By stating “Daddy will be home soon.” The jokes and good vibes did not stop there as he would continue throughout the night to not only goof around with the audience, but connect deeply with them.
The potential album of the year, oh yeah?, is what he would play front to back to start his set. From standout intro title track, to the phenomenal single “The Feeling,” all the way to “Bebe.” The importance of the sequencing was felt throughout the entirety of the album, as well as Steve concluding that run mentioning how proud he is of how that album is sequenced and that it is important to listen to it as intended. He would go on to say how this tour is a special tour because the only other time he’s ever played an album front to back at a show was for “Apollo XXI”. Catching a glimpse of this was special because he it is something out of the ordinary for him and to do it with such a close to the chest album of his was very inspiring to see.
The talent of Steve and his live band were on full display at the conclusion of “Doom” where they would have a over five minute jam sesh. The electric guitarist had an amazing solo, the drummer had huge passion and power behind their moment, and everybody else brought it for that point of the show and on.
As the night went on he would play a beautiful blend of all of his old songs. Bringing back great memories and feelings for each and every person in that audience. From “C U Girl” to “Ryd”, he ran through a huge portion of his discography. Taking song requests from fans and involving everybody in his set, it felt as though we were all in on a special night. He would end the night by mentioning how grateful he is that he gets to do what he does for a living and thinks he has two albums left in him. With jokes filtering that out, he would end the set with his global hit “Bad Habit”, and end with a repeat of the title track “Oh Yeah? And “The Feeling”, leaving everybody with a sense of serenity.
