The triple-header alt rock lineup of chokecherry, Beach Goons, and Wavves performed at the Sinclair last night, and when I tell you “you just had to be there”… I mean it. Chokecherry’s grunge-shoegaze alt rock sound was utterly mesmerizing, and the band brought the eclectic outfits that rounded out the vibe. The vocalists were incredible, the girls can shred, AND they even took a political stance, shouting “F*CK ICE” towards the end of their set.
They were followed by Beach Goons, who brought a more chill vibe to the venue, but still with an extremely strong sound. One of the best parts of their set was when lead singer Pablo Cervantez switched from singing in English to Spanish; you could hear the crowd resonating with the choice. Their setlist included songs like “Choker”, “Reservoir Dawgs”, and “Hsrb”, all of which were very surf-punk.
Wavves has been around for a long time now, with their uber-popular sophomore album “King of the Beach” coming out in 2010, and their experience shows. When they took the stage and opened with the hit song “Way Too Much” off their 2015 album “V”, the moshing began instantly. Lead singer Nathan Williams made some funny remarks about being “drunk off his ass”, but you never would’ve known it with how well he played. Wavves setlist included some of their oldies like “My Head Hurts” and “Tarantula” (a rare song for them to play these days), as well as songs off their newest album, “Spun”, such as “Goner” and “So Long”. They couldn’t have closed the set any better than playing their classic hit, “Green Eyes”, which everyone knew the words to.
