PHOTOS: Deep Purple, Jefferson Starship in Mansfield, MA (08.13.26)
Editor’s note: Legendary British rock band Deep Purple visited New England last month, coming to Massachusetts for the first time in nearly seven years, though they’ve visited New England via New Hampshire and Connecticut in 2024. They are on the road following the release of their twenty-fourth studio album, Splat!, which dropped in July. Though the group is approaching its 60th year in existence in 2028, it still features several members of the ‘classic’ lineup, including one member of the band’s formation lineup in 1968. Ian Gillian, Ian Paice, and Roger Glover were in the band in 1972 when they released their most commercially successful album, Machine Head, featuring the iconic track “Smoke on the Water.” Paice is the only remaining founding member of the band. Keyboardist Don Airey, who joined in 2002, and guitarist Simon McBride, born eleven years after the group’s founding, round out the current lineup. Coming along as support on this tour is San Fran rock band Jefferson Starship. Mike Von Villas caught the Mansfield show; check out his work from that night below.
