NEWS: Dead Man’s Bones release first new song in 17 years

In 2009, in the first year of writing about music, I was one of the few who got to witness the first and only Dead Man’s Bones album come to life at the Middle East Downstairs. A one-time tour, and a few limited shows in support of the self-titled Dead Man’s Bones. The album featured the Silverlake Conservatory Children’s Choir, and the choir was along for the ride in full face makeup, making for a show that seemed unreal.  Dead Man’s Bones, aka  Ryan Gosling and Zach Shields, created an album unlike any other, one that continues to resonate to this day. Be it powerful moments that will always be remembered, like “Pa Pa Power,” or “My Body’s a Zombie For You.” For those who were there for that tour, it was something that has never been replicated; until yesterday.

The band just released their first new track since 2009, “Lost In The Night.” The track is matched with a video starring Noah Jupe and Rain Spencer; the video begins in a cemetery and features the two quickly transitioning to a night in the city amongst the living. It gives a transition out of the darkness that was a theme on the last record, and a hint of the direction the band may be taking. A lot of time has obviously passed, as well as a lot of growth in both members’ lives. Gosling obviously on the silver screen ever since, and Shields, a writer/director, most recently on the upcoming Weapons prequel, Gladys.

While the fingerprints of the debut record are all over “Lost in The Night,” it’s also a clear directional shift for the band. A little bit of a lighter, all-American happiness injected into it, and hopefully an indication of more to come for this duo. The track came together in one day in the recording process, after trying out several studios in Los Angeles where it hadn’t really gelled, until the band reunited with longtime collaborator Tim Anderson. So far, there isn’t any concrete news on what a new track means for the band, but the track was released on Anti-, the home of their first album. And it appears that this could be just a drop in the pond for what could be coming over the next few months. Maybe a few shows, a new record, whatever it is, the band created a cult following with the first album, and fans will surely be waiting on bated breath for whatever could be coming from Gosling and Shields.
